For two weeks students from various countries of Europe and all parts of Ukraine will help clean and refurbish the Jewish cemetery located on the Zelena Street in Chernivtsi. These students are volunteers of the project of a German NGO, «An Act of Redemption – To Serve Peace». Chernivtsi has 70 nationalities inhabiting the city, among them are Jews, Romanians, Moldovans, Russians, Georgians, Armenians, Poles, Germans and other nationalities. This year August 2 will be the International Remembrance Day of Roma Victims of the Pharraimos (Holocaust) as adopted at the European Roma and Travelers Forum in the Council of Europe. On this day in 1944, more than 3000 Roma und Sinti in Auschwitz-Birkenau were gassed.
